Wow. This book was super interesting! The book is a memoir about a woman that grew up with a survivalist, antigovernmental family in the mountains of Idaho. These people were as off the grid as they could be. In addition, the family are devout Mormon and seem to have their own interpretations for what that means.
For me, this book really helped display how a family can go from what most of us perceive as normal to what we would perceive as cultish. The life of Tara Westover really allows you to explore a lot of questions about life and religion and mental health and society and government.
Tara wasn’t ever educated in a public school or any school for that matter until 17 years old and she decided to leave home and get an education. For me personally, the book helped me see why I think education is important and the dangers that can come from shutting yourself off from the world.
I gave the book 4 stars on Goodreads. I kind of wish there were 1/2 stars. It was very thought provoking and the author did a really good job of not bashing anyone and strictly telling the story.
